This chapter made a little chill go through my brain. I was very instense before Bruno answered fathers question, "Do you know what they do on the other side" and I was wondering if he was going to tell the truth that he knows Schmuel or not, and if he will actual say his feelings about the town, but then when it came out of is mouth, I never felt so relieved in the entire book. This is what I think could have possibly happened if Bruno did not stretch the truth:
Father: "Come in kids. I need to talk to you" ... Father: "Do you guys like it here" Kids: "well"... ... Father: "Bruno, do you know what happens on the other side?" Bruno: I guess I know a little bit, I understand that me getting Schmuel in trouble the other night, got him beat up the next day I"... Father: "The next day you what?" Bruno: "Nevermind. Father: "Tell me. what did you do?" Bruno: "well, I made a friend"... And so Bruno continued telling him about Schmuel, and continued to get in even more trouble each sentence he confessed. I would picture this chapter end with Bruno being sent back to Berlin and Schmuel, sadly, be very hurt to the point where he will no longer be on the camp, or the earth. Comparing that we assume that Pavel died by spilling wine on Lieutenant Kotler, when a prisoner in camp is talking to someone on the other side about his life. If you think about it, I'm glad Bruno lied.
