September is the first chapter in the book. The chapters go by months. The main characters are Holling Hoodhood, Mrs. Baker, Mr. & Mrs. Hoodhood Meryl Lee, Heather, Doug Swieteck and his brother. The protagonist is Hoodhood and the antagonist is Mrs. baker because it seems to Hoodhood that she hates his guts. Holling is the only Presbyterian in the whole class and everyone else is either Catholic or Jewish. Hooded discovers a bully while playing soccer. the Bully is Doug's brother was going against Holling and made him nervous. Everyone hates the brother, even Doug. When Hoodhood tripped him, Doug said he's been wanting to do that for a long time. Since Hoodhood is Presbyterian, while everyone else is at church mrs baker gives hooded something to do. Mrs Baker told the principle that Hoodhood should retake sixth grade but the principle thought it was unnecessary and absurd.
"Mrs. Baker hates your guts, right? I nodded. Then Holling, you might try getting some." I think this is an important quote in the book because holling is being hated on by a teacher, which isn't fair. plus, since he thinks the teacher is scary, he is becoming paranoid she might do something to him
