In June, Mrs. Baker takes the class on their yearly trip. Camping. Mrs. Baker hates camping, but does it just for her husband who will be home soon. Holling reads "Much Ado About Nothing", he realized that in real life people don't fall out of love instantly but gradually, and that happiness comes in different forms and may not always happen. Booby Kennedy was shot and killed. this caused jus as much dread as to when MLK Jr. was shot and died as well. He and Heather walk to Saint Adelbert's to light candles, but Kennedy dies the following morning. Holling and Heather hold one another and cry.
On Thursday, Holling and his class are taken on a journey on the Catskill Mountains to where they will camp. All the students hiked up the mountain until they arrived at their campsite. Holling ws given the job to hold all utensils for the campers. As Holling continued to walk up the mountain, he felt the bag getting lighter and lighter. When they arrived at their destination, Holling dug a hole to set up for a fire, until Mrs. Sidman opened up the bag and noticed all the utensils were gone. Mrs. Sidman thought of a punishment for Holling, to wash all dishes. meryll offered to help him as well. The next day everyone was swimming. Mrs. Sidman was trying to tell ghost stories, but they were just not scary the least bit. The next day everything was wet an damp since it rained last night. But it was time to go home and prepare for Danny Hupfer's bar mitzvah. Meryl Lee, Holling and Danny sat together during the ceremony, but Holling's family was not at there. His father was there to pick him up. Holling apparently aggravated his father since he is a jerk and made him drive off in anger. Holling would just walk home. Holling went back inside and began to dance with Meryl lee. When Holling talked to mrs. Baker, he realized this year wasn't so bad after all and had a great time this year at Camillo Junior High.

In May, the school begins to start the atomic bomb drills. The seventh grade also goes on a class field trip to architectural points in Long island since Mrs. baker spilled some cider and the class had to evacuate. Outside of school, Hollings varsity team (of the eighth graders) are still mad at Holling for his win. At home, Mr. Hoodhood is given an update on Mr. kowalski how he is getting the opportunity to redesign Yankee Stadium. Mr. Hoodhood is furious ad doesn't know what to do. Mr Hoodhood and Holling's sister agree about college again. It's getting worse by the day. She now eats in her room, she won't come out of her room, and is barely talking to anyone in her family. Mr. Hoodhood drives home a new car.
One day, Holling's sister leaves a note that says she ran away with her boyfriend to California to find herself and what she wants to do with her life. Holling is worried on what his sister will do. A couple nights after Holling's gets a call in the middle of the night from his sister saying she's broke and wants to go home. So Holling goes to bank and cashes in his savings to pay for his sisters bus ride back home. Mr. Hoodhood told Holling that Meryl Lee and her family may be moving since Mr. Kowalski and is associates ran to of business, Mrs. Baker coaches Holling for his varsity track since she was an olympic athlete a long time ago. During Social studies class, everyone was informed that Martin Luther King had been shot and killed. Mrs. Baker took Holling to a Yankees baseball game since his lame dad did not agree to take him. Holling had a month off Shakespeare due to track.
Mrs. Baker's had two rats in class. Shortly after some time in the school they are accidentally escaped and are now running around the school. Holling is forced to try out for the track team, but he is a very fast runner so it wasn't a big deal for him. He blew all the eighth graders away. Mai Thi is made fun of in school by some stupid bullies, but is saved by Doug Swieteck. After Doug Swieteck helped Mai Thi, he was suspended. Mai Thai is made fun of by a bully and luckily Doug Swietek came and saved the day even though it got him suspended. At the end of march, the two rats that were let loose were killed by a bus.
Holling's dad becomes the Chamber of commerce Business man of 1967. This months Shakespeare play is Romeo and Juliet. For valentines day, Holling asks Meryl Lee out on a date. When Holling went to the school the net day Mrs. Bigio gave him wo tickets to see the play. He decided to take Meryl Lee with him. After the play Holling and Meryl Lee talk about the architectural designs. When Meryl Lee takes them home nd shows them to her father. He then decides to copy Mr. Hoodhood's sketches and designs. This sets off Mr. Hoodhood. This caused Meryl Lee and Holling too avoid each other for the next couple days. As soon as it got too much, Mr. Kowalski dropped out his entry, which binds back Meryl Lee and Holling together. Holling brings Meryl Lee some gifts at her house. It was now back to normal.
In this chapter, holling gets revenge on Doug Swieteck's brother for posting those embarrassing pictures of him in the tights. Holling throws a snowball at him at a perfect angle that is smacked him directly in the nose leaving frostbite left on his face. During the standardized test, holling asks to go to the bathroom since he is drenched in his own thermal underwear since the radiator was broken in winter. he was not allowed to go during the test until after he finished. When Holling got in the bathroom, he saw Doug swietecks brother and some other boys smoking. Somehow, Doug Swietecks brother found out Holing threw the snowball at him and told Holling "you are dead". Holling saved his sister from a bus, even though he bruised his butt, he was a hero.
This month it was when the school announced the students at Camillo Junior High will be taking the New York standardized tests and would have to practice over break. In this chapter was when Holling dressed up in the yellow tights and feathers on his butt and was made fun of in a picture.
November, starts while Holling is in his "Perfect house" It eventually started leaking and dripping into the house which causes a small commotion.
While everyone ws at Church, Holling and Mrs. Baker stay behind in school. The next book she assigned Holling was called "The Tempest" Holling found more curses in the book and began going around saying them with everyone getting aggravated at him. He didn't just do it at home, but at school. after the book was finished, he takes yet another test with 150 questions, which I still think is insane, so did Holling. At the end of the chapter the suspense rises up when we hear Mrs. Bigio's husband was killed during the Vietnam War. Quote: "There is a part of us that can be so awful. And Shakespeare shows it to us in Caliban. But there's another part of us, too-a part that uses defeat to grow." I think that this line interprets that everyone has something to hide that we are ashamed of. Mrs. Baker told Hoodhood to clean the chalkboard, gets the chalk out of the erasers, organize the dictionaries, and clean up the classroom. Holding tells the class he would bring in cream puffs to get more buzz about his name. Hoodhood kept them by the window and chalkboard. When he was cleaning the chalkboard, he noticed he got some dust on the cream puffs. He didn't think anyone would notice. When Hoodhood got home many things were a bit out of its normal. His sister had a flower painted on her face. (symbolized peace and no war) His father did not agree with it which started a big argument. When Hoodhood got to school on Wednesday, Mrs Baker assigned him to read a book by Shakespeare because she thought it would bore him but it actually really intrigued Holling.
September is the first chapter in the book. The chapters go by months. The main characters are Holling Hoodhood, Mrs. Baker, Mr. & Mrs. Hoodhood Meryl Lee, Heather, Doug Swieteck and his brother. The protagonist is Hoodhood and the antagonist is Mrs. baker because it seems to Hoodhood that she hates his guts. Holling is the only Presbyterian in the whole class and everyone else is either Catholic or Jewish. Hooded discovers a bully while playing soccer. the Bully is Doug's brother was going against Holling and made him nervous. Everyone hates the brother, even Doug. When Hoodhood tripped him, Doug said he's been wanting to do that for a long time. Since Hoodhood is Presbyterian, while everyone else is at church mrs baker gives hooded something to do. Mrs Baker told the principle that Hoodhood should retake sixth grade but the principle thought it was unnecessary and absurd.
"Mrs. Baker hates your guts, right? I nodded. Then Holling, you might try getting some." I think this is an important quote in the book because holling is being hated on by a teacher, which isn't fair. plus, since he thinks the teacher is scary, he is becoming paranoid she might do something to him |
